How painful is a Hair Transplant?Once the area is numbed, the patient does not feel any pain for the rest of the day. Patients are given pain medication for the evening after the procedure, and pain resolves in 99% of cases within 2-3 days of a hair transplant.
-
What are the risks?Hair Transplant surgery is one of the lowest risk cosmetic procedures currently available. As with all surgical procedures, common risks include bleeding, infection and pain. A 2021 study by Dr Anil. K. Garg found that in 2896 patients, operated over a 10 year period, 'the overall significant life-threatening or major complications were zero, but the total minor complications' percentage was 0.10%.' At PARISSIS MEDICAL, we share the same experience - having had no signficant complications and a very low incidence of minor complications. We have had no subsequent law suits and have enjoyed excellent patient satisfaction in every single patient.
-
Will my Hair Transplant definitely grow? There is no guarantee of growth in any patient, ever. This is due to differences in the physiology and anatomy between patients. However, we have never had a failure of growth or a significant medical complication beyond the level of a pimple or ingrown hair.
-
How long does recovery take?Once again, this depends on which type of procedure is used. We like to think of recovery in two parts - surgery and appearance. With your surgical recovery, most patients can return to (non-laborious) work after 4 days (in both FUT and FUE). With appearance, this is up to the patient. But in general the recipient area of most patients resembles a buzz cut after 7 days. In FUT, sutures/staples are removed after 10-14 days but because they are often hidden by surrounding hair, patients tend to return to social settings earlier!
-
What happens on the day?Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the receptionist shortly after which Dr Mondrian Parissis will invite you into the consultation room. The surgical plan will be confirmed and lines drawn on for reference. Photographs will be taken to compare to after the procedure. You will then be prepared for surgery. After it is finished, patients are explained how best to look after their hair transplant.
-
How can I conceal my Hair Transplant? At the end of the day the once bald area looks like a buzz cut with a sunburn. This heals quickly. A hat is provided to conceal the transplant and protect the grafts - this can be worn immediately after the procedure and thereafter.
-
How should I prepare for a Hair Transplant?Preparing for a hair transplant depends on what type of hair transplant is being performed. With FUT, scalp exercises are recommended for 10 days before the procedure to ensure maximum scalp skin laxity and therefore best chance of successful wound closure. With both FUT and FUE, it is recommended to stay well hydrated, eat a balanced diet and no alcohol 10 days before your procedure.
-
Can I style my Hair Transplant?Once grown, transplanted hair is just like native hair. It can therefore be cut and styled like normal.
-
Is a Hair Transplant Permanent?Hair Transplant Surgery is currently the only permanent solution to hair loss available.
-
Do you perform repair cases?Yes. Unfortunately, there is a population of patients in our practice that come to us seeking repair of work performed at an outside office. Repair of previous work requires skill and careful planning, but can be extremely effective.
-
Should I eat breakfast the morning of the procedure? Before most medical procedures patients are required NOT to eat anything for hours or even a day prior to their visit. This is NOT the case for our hair transplant patients. We want you to have something in your stomach before visiting so a good breakfast is encouraged, but nothing heavy with a lot of grease. Our general rule is that patients should get some sugar into them in the morning before visiting. This is because the excitement from the idea of getting the procedure can actually lower normal blood sugar levels. A good glass of juice or morning pastry are the perfect remedies. If you want to bring some snacks or your favorite food by all means feel free to do so. You may eat during your procedure.
-
Do you do follow-up?Follow up is not required, but always welcomed. We ask that all follicular unit transplant patients visit us at 6, 12 and 18 months to monitor healing and rate of growth. A lot of patients find this fun to monitor progress!
-
When can I shower after my Hair Transplant?Patients may shower the next day and wash the scalp. They can even swim in the ocean after 3 days if planning on taking a vacation!
-
Can I take a bathroom break during my Hair Transplant? There is almost no point in the procedure where the patient cannot get up to stretch or use the bathroom!
-
How long does a Hair Transplant take to perform? This mainly depends on the type of procedure performed - but the average time is 6-8 hours.
-
How should I get home after the procedure?Patients do this differently and we do not have a specific rule on this. We do recommend the patient gets transported home, simply for comfort after the procedure. 'To drive or not to drive?' --> Patients may drive themselves to and from the office if they live within a 40 minute distance. This is made possible because we do not use general anaesthesia and rarely need sedatives. For patients that live very far away we recommend staying in a local hotel the night before so they don't have to stress over getting to the office on time in the morning and/or deal with heavy morning traffic. That said, we have had patients drive from as far as Bournemouth and drive back on the same day. We do not formally recommend this, but has been done. Again, this re-confirms how easy a modern hair transplant can be.
